Data Centers: How Efficient is Yours Really?

Efficiency, as they say, is job one.  This is a business reality that has most likely existed since the very first company made its very first sale.  The ability to do higher quality work at a faster rate and lower expense is one of the deciding factors in how successful an enterprise can be.  Given the switch to increasingly online and electronic means of doing business and using and storing data, efficiency of your data center and network cabling is absolutely crucial.

Recently, a group of organizations led by The Green Grid has proposed a very standard way for data centers to measure their Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

Essentially, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a way for operators to measure the efficiency of data centers by comparing the total energy consumed by that data center to the amount of that energy that actually reaches IT equipment.  Doing so shows exactly how much is lost to other equipment like cooling systems.  Currently, support is strong for PUE but since the Department of Energy has yet to adopt it, it’s still difficult for data centers everywhere to compare their own efficiency.

When it comes to proper data center efficiency, proper network cabling installation is an important step.  As network cabling is the backbone to the entire data center, ensuring that it is done correctly and using only the highest quality components is the best way to stay ahead of the competition. The most well-built IT infrastructures all rely on an easily integrated network cabling systems that can help reduce costs while supporting the latest and most robust technologies

It will be interesting to see how PUE and their various categories of efficiencies, ranging from PUE Category 0 to PUE Category 3, the most accurate, will be picked up and adopted for measurement going forward.  PUE Category 3 measures energy consumption using a 12-month total reading taken at the exact point of connection of the IT devices to the actual electrical system.

With efficiency as the goal, a means of measuring that is important.  To ensure that your data center is running as efficient as possible, start by making sure your structured cabling installation is done properly with the best equipment and components.  If you’re ready to learn more about data center efficiency and network cabling installations please feel free to visit Datatrend and contact us today to help get you started!
