“Going green” goes far beyond simply shutting of the lights when you leave work. Companies today are turning their business and practices upside-down to find new ways to not only conserve resources, but also improve their bottom line.
Many businesses have adopted practices to green their data centers in an effort to operate more sustainably. For example:
- Moving to more efficient power supplies
- Turning off power management features
- Eliminating over-provisioning of data center resources
- Turning off unused servers and other equipment after hours
- Moving server-based applications onto virtual machines through virtualization
But just why are so many businesses making the move to greener, most efficient IT and network practices? Here are the top four reasons to implement efforts to green your data center:
- Mind your budget. IT often accounts for 30% to 40% of a business’ entire energy budget.
- Reduce costs. Energy costs are predicted to increase to 71 cents for every dollar spent on PCs and other hardware.
- Reduce emissions. Approximately 39% of IT CO2 emissions come from PCs and monitors, and 23% via servers and cooling.
- It starts with the PC. The average desktop PC wastes nearly half of the energy it consumes as heat, which translates to higher electricity bills and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
