Issue: 6 - Sarbanes-Oxley: What it Means for your Business.

This issue of TrendSetter focuses on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). This legislation creates a standard of accountability of companies for their corporate accounting and business practices, but it also brings about interesting regulations on technology, including data retention and warehousing. The articles in this issue look at different aspects of SOX and its influences on the IT world. Alan Stuart looks at its significance within the business and technical sides of the organization. Meanwhile, Ronald Lyman dives into what SOX says and how it really affects today's businesses. Charlie Cox relates the trends of this legislation to the Y2K trends of 1999. And, Diane Hage looks at how certain software offerings can help bring a business into regulatory compliance.

Give And Take

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts: "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?"

The man below says: "Yes. You're in a hot air balloon, hovering thirty feet above this field."

"You must work in information technology," says the balloonist.

"I do," replies the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but it's no use to anyone."

The man below says, "You must work in business management."

"I do," replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," says the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help. You're in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my fault."
