Y2K Fiasco from www.anecdotage.com

In 1970, a committee of scientists - including Harry White, a young data-elements code processor at the Pentagon - recruited 86 technical societies to appeal for an official American "Year of the Computer" proclamation, intended as a platform to sell the four-digit year and avoid a future Y2K fiasco.

"I could see many applications by necessity needed a four-digit year - personnel, medical records, retirement..." White later explained. "When you do those with two digits, it will cause considerable problems."

Alas, the idea was scuppered by president Richard Nixon - and the committee's lead organizer never learned why.
